Today, on the anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, we begin National Anti-Poverty Week - and focus on work for peace and justice, and conserving natural resources in our world . . . (pause)
So, let us pray - first - for strength to honour John the 23rd's legacy to the church by supporting Pastoral Associates and Administrators in our parish communities, who act as co-workers with our priests . . . (pause)
Lord, hear us,

We pray for people living in poverty in rural areas, no longer able to produce the food they need to survive, in parts of Africa and Asia, and of our own country, and for others, trying to help them discover and conserve new, life-giving water resources . . . (pause)

As we remember Rigoberta Menchu Tum, the first indigenous woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1992, for promoting human rights for her people, we also pray for those who will benefit from the work of an Australian woman, Elizabeth Blackburn, given the same award - for medical research - last week . . . (pause)
