As we focus on those Jesus sent out to do God’s work in his community – in today’s Gospel reading – we pray for a similar sense of purpose, and a willingness to ‘be there’ for people who ask for our help in the coming week

All: Lord, hear our prayer
As we anticipate the anniversary of the detonation of the first atomic bomb in 1945, next Thursday, let us pray that more will decide to follow the example of the leaders of Russia and the United States – who have just reached an agreement to cut the size of their countries’ nuclear arsenals . . . (pause)

All: Lord, hear our prayer
Let us pray, too, for those in Australia, and other parts of our world, who still struggle for basic human rights, in a week when we also remember the birthday of Nelson Mandela, who helped his own people find justice and reconciliation . . . (pause)

Let us pause, and honour the traditional owners of this land . . . (pause)
and as we remember the recognition of their flags of our country next Tuesday, let us pray for the resourcefulness to continue to sustain the environment . . . . (pause)
